The upcoming November 4, 2026 local government elections in Ekurhuleni have produced a fragmented contest, with the ANC's shortlist of finalists—including finance MMC and regional secretary Jongizizwe Dlabathi, incumbent mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, former mayor Ntombi Mekgwe, and council whip Pelisa Nkunjana—still awaiting final selection in September after a vetting process focused on integrity and local government experience. Internal ANC regional tensions, including an earlier REC nomination favoring Dlabathi over Xhakaza amid coalition strains and mayoral committee reshuffles, have kept probabilities dispersed. EFF nominee and former speaker Nthabiseng Tshivenga, MK Party candidate Thulani Shongwe, and other contenders such as Xolani Khumalo and Nomadlozi Nkosi add further competition in a metro marked by past coalition instability. These unresolved party processes and multi-candidate field sustain tight trader consensus around the leading names.
