Democratic enthusiasm in opposition to President Trump’s second term, amid approval ratings in the low-to-mid 40s and economic concerns, has produced stronger likely-voter screens and elevated primary participation for Democrats, supporting trader focus on the 115–125 million range. Republicans face structural headwinds mobilizing their working-class coalition without a presidential candidate on the ballot, though targeted GOTV operations and expanded mail voting provide counterbalancing tools. The narrow spread across the top four outcomes reflects uncertainty over whether opposition energy will lift overall participation above the 2018 record or whether base fatigue and demographic turnout patterns will cap it near recent midterm norms, with late-cycle developments such as economic data releases or major campaign events the most likely catalysts for separation.
