Recent polling averages place the AfD first with roughly 36 percent support ahead of the September 20 election, while the SPD holds steady near 29 percent, well ahead of Die Linke, the CDU, and smaller parties. This consistent gap has driven trader consensus toward the SPD for second place. The AfD’s sustained lead in the east reflects ongoing regional shifts, though coalition barriers and the “firewall” maintained by other parties limit any realistic path for it to finish lower. Upcoming final weeks of campaigning and any late swings in turnout among eastern voters remain the main variables that could alter second-place positioning before votes are counted.
