A strong and intensifying El Niño pattern is the dominant driver behind the 86% market-implied probability that no Category 4 hurricane will strike the U.S. before 2027. NOAA’s August 2026 update assigns a 75% chance of a below-normal Atlantic season, forecasting just 2–6 hurricanes and 0–2 major hurricanes (Category 3+) through November, with Colorado State University placing the probability of any major U.S. landfall at only 17–24%. The 2026 season has produced only three early tropical storms and zero hurricanes so far, extending the quiet spell from 2025 that saw no U.S. hurricane landfalls. Strong vertical wind shear and drier mid-level air associated with El Niño historically suppress rapid intensification and steering patterns favorable for major strikes, while peak-season activity remains weeks away and model consensus continues to favor limited development.
