This market will resolve to "Yes" if the CDC identifies a new COVID variant of concern between December 1, 2025, and December 31, 2026, 11:59PM ET. Otherwise this market will resolve to "No". The CDC's variant classification scheme can be found here: https://stacks.cdc.gov/view/cdc/107682. The resolution source for this market will be official information from the CDC.**Current circulating SARS-CoV-2 lineages continue to evolve within established groups without triggering new Variant of Concern designations.** As of late August 2026, the WHO tracks only JN.1 as a Variant of Interest, alongside several Variants Under Monitoring such as XFG (Stratus), NB.1.8.1 (Nimbus), and BA.3.2 (Cicada). These show ongoing mutations and some immune escape but have not produced the combination of higher transmissibility, severity, or immune evasion needed for VOC status. Population-level immunity from prior infections and vaccinations, coupled with improved clinical management, has kept disease burden low despite summer waves in multiple regions. Recent vaccine strain selections for the 2026–2027 season target XFG, reflecting its dominance without signaling an abrupt shift that would warrant reclassification. Genomic surveillance indicates these lineages are cocirculating rather than one rapidly displacing others with concerning traits. With roughly four months remaining until 2027 and no signs of accelerated evolution or policy changes that would elevate a new lineage, the market’s strong “No” consensus aligns with the absence of recent catalysts capable of producing a VOC in that short window.
