US military forces captured Nicolás Maduro and his wife in Caracas in January 2026 during a special operation, after which they were arraigned in Manhattan federal court on narco-terrorism, cocaine importation, and weapons conspiracy charges carrying potential life sentences. They have pleaded not guilty and remain detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn under strict conditions while awaiting a June 2027 trial date set in July. Defense motions challenging the legality of the military seizure and jurisdiction continue through pretrial proceedings, with the interim Venezuelan government under Delcy Rodríguez navigating US pressure on sanctions relief and oil policy. This extended timeline, combined with ongoing legal objections and the possibility of plea negotiations or political shifts, sustains tight trader consensus between acquittal or dismissal scenarios and lengthy prison outcomes.
