The Trump administration’s February 2026 notification to Congress of a phased plan to resume operations at the long-closed U.S. Embassy in Damascus, combined with the August 24, 2026, rescission of Syria’s state-sponsor-of-terrorism designation, has accelerated normalization under President Trump and envoy Tom Barrack. These steps followed the December 2024 fall of the Assad regime, the May 2025 raising of the U.S. flag at the compound, sanctions relief, and growing U.S.-Syrian business and security contacts. Full reopening still requires security assurances, congressional review periods, and operational readiness, leaving timing dependent on continued progress in bilateral ties and any new diplomatic or stability developments.
