Somaliland’s parliamentary elections, originally slated for May 2026, were formally postponed by roughly ten months to March 2027, establishing a clear procedural timeline that underpins the overwhelming market consensus against any vote before 2027. This delay aligns with repeated historical patterns of extensions driven by electoral commission preparations, clan-based negotiations over candidate lists, and post-2024 presidential transition logistics following Waddani’s victory. The three recognized parties—Waddani, Kulmiye, and UCID—face structural limits on new entrants and require fresh voter registration and security arrangements, further reducing near-term feasibility. While late political agreements or external diplomatic pressure could theoretically accelerate preparations, such shifts would need to overcome entrenched institutional timelines and resource constraints within the current window.
