Abiy Ahmed’s commanding position in this market stems from his Prosperity Party’s landslide victory in the June 2026 general election, which delivered a large parliamentary majority and cleared the path for his formal reappointment when the new legislature convenes in October. Incumbency, party control, and the first-past-the-post electoral system reinforce this outcome, with traders viewing sustained dominance in the House of Peoples’ Representatives as the decisive factor. Minor contenders such as Gedion Timothewos, Berhanu Nega, and others remain at negligible levels because they lack comparable institutional backing or recent electoral success. Shifts could still arise from sudden health events, internal party fractures, or major escalations in regional security challenges that alter parliamentary alignments before the next scheduled vote.
